THE FARM SMALL IN ACRES, BIG IN PLANS Shacklabank is part of this unique landscape we call home. A traditional Cumbrian working hill farm we, whenever possible, work with, and not against, the land. Shacklabank is small in acres but big in plans for her future. We keep a registered flock of native breed rough fell sheep, a small herd of suckler cows, quite a mixture of Maran, Light Sussex and bantam hens, a gang of Indian runner ducks and not forgetting my pride and joy my Fell Ponies (another of our wonderful native breeds). We also have Moss our working sheepdog and Kipper, Tweed, and Lily - three naughty but nice Jack Russell terriers. Shacklabank is in Defra’s “Countryside Stewardship Scheme”, a contracted agreement between Defra and ourselves which enhances and protects the landscape, wildlife, and any history/archaeology on the land. We ensure at all times that the public rights of way through our farm land are kept clear. We already have a “waste not want not” way of living up here on the hill and re-cycle whenever and wherever possible. We use eco-friendly products for washing, cleaning and so on. This autumn we have become involved with various schemes to lead us to organic status. The farm has a herb/kitchen garden providing us with seasonal produce. We eat our own lamb and beef and never take for granted being able to collect fresh newly-laid eggs from the barn to have at breakfast time! Our life here at Shacklabank truly is a labour of love. | ||
