FARM EXPERIENCE

"A thriving community is a vital component in a living countryside "    HRH Prince Charles

Shacklabank offers a rare chance to sample life on the farm

Our aim is to re-connect you to the countryside and to the land we all live upon a connection that we are so rapidly losing .You could be involved as little or as much in the practical side of the farm as you would like to experience

Collect eggs from the barn, see lambs being born in spring time and help with their very vital first days of life, help gather the flocks with our sheepdog Moss, take part in clipping time and help roll the lanolin rich fleeces, have fun at hay time seeing the meadows mown, turned and baled breathing in that sweet smell one only really gets from newly made hay, work alongside us handling the sheep, cows and ponies, gain an understanding of good husbandry and care of all the stock, See how important the “Field to fork” message is and taste the benefit of British Meat fresh to our table

Help or have a go at Home-baking, preserving, or a potter in the vegetable plot

There will also be chance to take part in rural crafts such as hedge laying and dry stone walling in the Autumn

 LIFESTYLE & SENSE OF PLACE

We aim to give you insight into the life of simple hill folk to sample our life, work and viewpoint to come along and be part of something not just an interested observer

In the Summer months we take trips out to many of the local agricultural shows and gatherings which will give you an insight into rural life and its traditions.Come and take part in the world famous Appleby horse fair and meet up with other farmers, crafts people and locals

In the Autumn or” back end” as we say up here, come along and see the selling/buying of stock at an Auction Mart

We invite you to have a hand’s on holiday in the hills
